State House Representative Vanessa Guerra along with Legal Services of Eastern Michigan and others are sponsoring an Expungement Clinic on March 13, 2020. We need volunteer attorneys to help.
What is required?
We need attorneys for morning or afternoon (or day long) shifts to meet with prospective applicants to help complete the paperwork to have criminal convictions set aside. Most applicants are being pre-screened through Legal Services to determine their eligibility for expungement. Most of the fees associated with the process will be waived. The sheriff will be on site to do fingerprinting. It is truly meant to be one-stop shopping.
The paperwork consists of a two page application and one page order form. Before each session, volunteer attorneys will receive training on the expungement process and how to complete the forms.
Statistics show that only about 6% of people eligible for an expungement actually get their records expunged. Having a criminal record can adversely affect a person's employability, limit housing options and may limit their eligibility for other benefits. Helping someone get a criminal record expunged can actually change lives! I sincerely hope you will come help!
