Obituary for Joann Helen Pohlman (Roenicke)

Joann Helen (Roenicke) Pohlman
Abilene, Texas
Formerly of Saginaw, Michigan

Joann Helen (Roenicke) Pohlman, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on March 1, 2024 at the age of 94. The daughter of the late Walter and Helen (Baumer) Roenicke, Joann was born on January 9, 1930 in Saginaw, Michigan. She grew up during the Great Depression and the Second World War when times were tough, and she learned the importance of a disciplined work ethic which she carried with her throughout her life.

She married Carl A. Pohlman on February 3, 1951. He predeceased her on February 7, 2016, following 65 years of marriage. Starting her work career while in high school, she found her passion at the Saginaw County Court House where she worked for the Saginaw County Treasurer, first as a clerk and advancing to Assistant Treasurer. For a short time, she assumed the role of County Treasurer prior to the next election. She then moved to the Prosecutor’s office, and ended her career with the Circuit Court where she served as the secretary for the Judge and Court Clerk. Her service with Saginaw County lasted 36 years. 

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Abilene, TX, and a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church (Gladwin, MI), St. Dominic Parish/St. Stephen Catholic Church and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church (Saginaw, MI). She was also a member of the Saginaw County Retirees and League of Catholic Women. She enjoyed walking, sewing, knitting, traveling, hosting friends and relatives, and especially spending time with her family. She spent most of her years living in Saginaw but upon retiring in 1999, Joann and Carl moved to Gladwin, MI to enjoy their retirement on Wiggins Lake. Joann later moved to Spring Lake and then to Abilene, TX where she lived until her passing.

Surviving are her children, Carl /Cap (Debra) Pohlman, Spring Lake, Michigan; Dr. Janelle (Dr. Dennis) O’Connell, Abilene, Texas; Carter (Barbara) Pohlman, Elk Rapids, Michigan; seven grandchildren, Karli (Jason) Baldus, Carey (Cara), Pohlman, Evan (Heather) O'Connell, Cameron (April) O’Connell, Dr. Keelan (Jonathan) Camacho, Dr. Kelly Pohlman, and Katie (Kyle) Crew; her Great Grandchildren: Karina & Jackson Baldus, Paxton & Carver Pohlman, Luke, Zack, and Josh O’Connell, Calista and Kerrigan Camacho and her brother, Walter (Norma) Roenicke and sister in-law, Judy Pohlman, along with several nieces and nephews, and special friends, J. Chester Foster and Sandra Salazar. 

In addition to her husband, Joann was preceded in death by her twin sons, Christopher and Craig Pohlman, her sister Jean (Curtis) Thornton and in-laws Fran (John) Coughlin, Peter Pohlman, and Michael (Sue) Pohlman.

A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at St. Dominic Parish – St. Stephen Catholic Church, 2711 Mackinaw St., with interment to follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Friends may visit with the family at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd. (between Shattuck and McCarty), from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2024, and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Family and friends will pray the rosary, Friday at 5:30 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the American Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
