October is National Pro Bono Month.  To support the goals of pro bono, we want to provide an opportunity to meet the recommended pro bono hours suggested by our ethic rules.  Below are a few simple or scope limited opportunities we hope you will consider.

The "Ratings" are just a guide from our perspective of the time commitment and your perspective may differ.  We respect that.

We gather significant information from clients before seeking help.  We will work with you in getting documents for review and provide other support.

1. POST-JUDGMENT MOTION:  This client has a separate maintenance judgment from 2008.  The spouse is a GM retiree.  Per the judgment and a subsequent order, the spouse was ordered to keep health insurance for the client in certain situations.  Apparently the spouse's GM insurance has changed and the client is no longer covered.  The client needs help determining if this was correct and enforcing coverage if it was not.  Rated:Easy

2. FOC Hearing: Client is doing their own divorce.  The other party was served and hired an attorney who filed an answer and counter- complaint. Our client is worried about the FOC Referee Hearing if the other party is represented and they are pro se.

There is a marital home involved but no other property.

Client would like representation but would be thankful for even limited scope representation for the FOC hearing.
Rated: Medium

3. THIRD PARTY CUSTODY PETITION: The clients currently have guardianship of their three grandchildren as both biological parents are presently not fit to care for them. There is a child support case established where one of the bio parents is to pay support to our clients.  They have been the guardians for about two years.

At the most recent review hearing in the guardianship cases, it was suggested to the clients to seek custody of these minors.

Rated:Medium-Hard

If you are interested in any of the opportunities, please reach out LSEM's pro bono coordinator, Jamie Clayton, at jclayton@PROTECTED or call her at 989-252-7329.  Jamie is not an attorney and is not part of this list so I would ask that you contact her directly.
